Although there were spots right in Harlem that blacks couldn’t enter, the Savoy was integrated. In fact, as far as I know, it was the only integrated ballroom in the country at the time, and by that I mean that black and whites could dance with each other. It was an extraordinary place. At the Savoy, it didn’t matter what color you were, black, white, green, yellow, or whatever. I don’t even remember noticing people’s skin color. The only thing they asked when you walked in was “Can you dance?” They never looked at your face, only at your feet. (Frankie Manning, 2007)
Swing&Soda è una scuola di swing dance che ha come primo obiettivo quello di diffondere anche a Roma un ballo tanto energico e travolgente quanto espressivo e passionale. Con il termine Swing Dance ci si riferisce ad un insieme di balli di origine afroamericana nati negli anni '20 e poi sviluppatisi nei decenni successivi. Il più noto di questi, il Lindy Hop, nacque ad Harlem e raggiunse il massimo della sua popolarità tra gli anni 30 e 40. Fu in quegli anni che si creò quel legame inscindibile tra le grandi orchestre e i ballerini, anche grazie alla nascita di sale immense quali il Savoy Ballroom, la più popolare tra queste e la prima ad ospitare bianchi e neri senza distinzione.
